About the event
Pack a picnic for Dad and join us for ride #3 in our family bike ride series. This time we will explore the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail from Lowell to Concord (and beyond?).
While the ride is intended for riders of all ages and abilities, it is our thought that the minimum age will be 10 years old.
You as a parent can make the call for your children, but we do ask that all riders, regardless of age, be able to ride a bike without training wheels and be able to maintain the average ride speed posted below.
The Bruce Freeman trail offers places along the route to swim and picnic at Heart Pond in Chelmsford, and at Nara Park in Acton. The extended rest stop for this ride will be at Heart Pond for a BYO picnic. There is often a mobile food vendor set up, but we cannot guarantee that they will be there. Heart Pond is a great ride goal for younger riders, or for anyone wanting a shorter 8-10 mile ride.
From there the ride will continue along the Bruce Freeman trail as it extends to Concord, MA. There are many photo opportunitues along the route as well as the remnants of a water powered pencil factory. Sounds exciting, non?!
The Bruce Freeman trail extention will OFFICIALLY extend across the new Rte 2 bridge in July 2022. The route may be finished already so; provided the route is paved, and there are no "obvious" barriers, there might be opportunity to explore the new trail section...unoficially :)
Class I & II pedal assist ebikes are allowed on all Pedalin' Fools group rides, provided they can be operated within the safe perameters of the group, to include the average speed posted below.
Average ride speed: between 12-14 mph.
Trail Surface: paved
Helmets are required for all Pedalin' Fools rides.
The ride will be leaving the parking lot promptly at 10:00 AM.
DIRECTIONS:
From Rte 495: Take Exit 89 A,B,C for Lowell Connector/Rte 3. Follow to Exit 89 B, Rte 3 North/Nashua. As you enter Rte 3 from the ramp STAY IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE and take the immediate exit for Rte 110. Turn right at the end of the exit, and then right into the Cross Point Towers. The trailhead parking lot is in the far corner of the parking lot.
Pedalin' Fools will be following all CDC and State guidelines for small outdoor gatherings with regard to COVID.
IS THIS YOUR FIRST PEDALIN' FOOLS RIDE OF THE SEASON?
You must fill out a ride waiver on an annual basis for yourself and any members of your ride group who are under the age of 18. If this is your first ride of the season, please follow the link to the ride waiver(s).
We look forward to seeing you there!
